My Favorite Headshot Poses
If you’ve ever found yourself standing in front of a camera wondering “What do I even do with my hands?”, welcome to the club. As someone who spent 15 years behind the lens before shifting into design and marketing, I can tell you: almost everyone feels awkward in front of a camera. Yes, even the people who look totally relaxed in their headshots.
The secret isn’t about becoming a model. It’s about finding simple, natural headshot poses that let your personality shine without making you look like a stiff cardboard cutout.
Here are some of my favorite go-to poses for headshots; tried, tested, and client-approved.

The Subtle Angle
Facing the camera dead-on can sometimes feel… intense. A small shift, just 10 to 15 degrees, adds dimension and softens your features. It also helps avoid the dreaded DMV photo vibe.
Why it works: It looks polished without looking posed. Perfect for natural headshots where you want to highlight warmth and professionalism at the same time.
The Gentle Lean
This pose is pure magic because it instantly makes you look approachable and engaged, like you’re leaning in to really listen. For therapists and small business owners, that’s gold. Clients want to feel like you’re present and attentive, not looming above them like a high school principal.
Why it works: it softens the frame, adds movement, and creates a sense of trust.
Bonus: it’s super easy to do. Just lean slightly forward from the waist or perch lightly on a chair arm.
The Lifestyle Twist
Sometimes the best headshot pose isn’t just a headshot. A lifestyle-inspired portrait, standing with a natural motion, wearing something that feels authentic to you, can be powerful for small business branding.
Why it works: it tells a story beyond “professional headshot.” If you’re a creative therapist, a hair stylist and/or make-up artist, a wellness coach, or a small business owner who thrives on individuality, a lifestyle pose communicates confidence and personality in one frame.
The Genuine Smile
Here’s the truth: nobody trusts the “say cheese” smile. A genuine smile comes in shades, from a soft grin to a big laugh, and each version can work beautifully for a professional headshot.
Why it works: it makes you look like a real human (because you are). For therapists especially, a smile says, you’re safe here.
Pro tip: if smiling feels forced, think of someone who always makes you laugh or recall a ridiculous inside joke. (Trust me, your eyes will do the smiling for you.)
The Power Lean
This pose radiates confidence without saying a word. By leaning forward just a touch and bringing the hands together, you create a sense of presence and authority while still feeling approachable. It’s a fantastic choice for therapists, coaches, and business owners who want to communicate I’m grounded, I’ve got you, and I know what I’m doing.
Why it works: It strikes a beautiful balance of strength and warmth. The forward lean pulls the viewer in, while the clasped hands keep it natural. It avoids stiffness but still commands respect, perfect for anyone whose work depends on trust and leadership.
The Confident Straight-On
Okay, so I said dead-on can be intense. And that’s true, unless you own it. A straight-on, hands-at-ease pose can project confidence and strength. The key is relaxed shoulders and steady energy (think “I know my worth” rather than “passport photo 2.0”). This is NOT the pose for you if you have a natural RBF; that can make it feel intimidating. The “smize” is key!
Why it works: it’s bold, professional, and makes an impression. Great for business owners who want to stand out without looking unapproachable.
Why These Headshot Poses Work
Each of these poses strikes that delicate balance between professional and natural. They communicate approachability, warmth, and confidence, the trifecta for anyone building trust, whether you’re a therapist, counselor, or small business owner.
And let’s be real: posing doesn’t have to feel awkward. When you know a few simple tricks, you can walk into a headshot session without worrying about your hands, your shoulders, or whether your smile looks real (spoiler: it does). With just a handful of natural headshot poses, you can look approachable, professional, and entirely like you. So, the next time you find yourself asking “What do I do with my hands?”, try one of these poses, shake off the awkwardness, and let your natural self show up.
